Sunset at Hatchet Pond. I was the only person there. Everyone else was rushing home.

The little man’s grandmother put this large pond and stream, complete with waterfalls, in her backyard since our last visit.

The Old Ice Pond at Hinkley Park

I was driving home from shooting Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth when I took a wrong turn that turned out to be right. I saw some cars in a parking lot and people disappearing into the woods. What I found was a fantastic discovery! There are these two ponds with little bridges at the ends and woods and a small brook connecting the ponds. And ducks. I’ll post some of the lighthouse and more from here tomorrow.

This is an HDR from three bracketed exposures. I used Dynamic Photo HDR. Thanks, AJ, for the tips.

Yes I know it’s another pond lily but seriously, they were so photogenically unresistable, I had to upload another one.

Walden Pond Sunrise

In the northern hemisphere, and in the last few months of the year, the temperature gets colder. In early autumn mornings, the outside air temperature can actually be cooler than the temperature of the water in this pond, and in most ponds in the northern hemisphere. Cooler air temperature, and a warmer water temperature — its like having a boiling caldera exposed to the noontime sun. It simmers. Photo taken shortly before sunrise at Walden Pond.

Walden Pond is said to be formed by Glaciers retreating to the northern hemisphere, a few thousand years ago. Henry David Thoreau, one the well known American writers and philosopher lived on the shores of this pond in the mid 1800s.

Close to the northern entrance of the park is the Estanque del Retiro ("Retiro Pond"), a large artificial pond. Next to it is the monument to King Alfonso XII, featuring a semicircular colonnade and an equestrian statue of the monarch on the top of a tall central core (Wikipedia).

What is the natural process that causes ponds and lakes to transform into forests over time? (The answer can be found on the display boards at the main Sharon Woods Harbor entrance that leads to the snack bar and playgrounds)

On Frozen Pond

If you want to see how I made this (and how you can too!), visit my HDR Tutorial. I hope it gives you some new tricks!

I probably should not have been standing in the middle of this frozen pond.

But when you are raised in Texas and you rarely get to see anything frozen, you get fascinated by large frozen bodies of water. I just stared at it for a long time like a deer that’s never seen headlights in the forest. I felt the saying, "When in Rome", and somehow replaced it with "When in Reykjavik…"

I slowly shuffled my feet out to the middle, using my tripod as an Imperial Hoth Walker to secure my footing. Once I got to the right spot for the lens, I ripped off a few shots before heading over to the safely of the shore.
